So, finished FSM now. It was a really good event with lots of people, we got quite a few applications today. It was a lot more than the security event I went to last year in September, but that's because security really isn't as big as it once was. Fire safety is far more considered these days due to Grenfell. I'm so glad to be going home now though because my legs are absolutely killing me. Standing for 6 hours is seriously no joke. There was a chair that I didn't think I'd use at the beginning, but practically needed it to continue going with the event. It feels so good to just sit in the car right now, I can't believe it.
I woke up at 6:50 because we needed to start setting up at 7 AM. But, I fell back asleep which was not good. Thankfully my colleague rang me at like 7:08 to ask where I was, which I said "I'M UP I'M COMING!". I made it to the event, which was connected to the hotel (thankfully), at about 7:15. We set up the stands and put things out on the table for people to take. It took about an hour to set up and it got to 8:20 where my other colleagues arrived. They said they already had breakfast and checked out. Bear in mind I woke up at 7 AM, no food and no vape. I was STRUGGLING! So, I left at 8:25 (the event started at 8:30) and went to eat breakfast. I wouldn't have been able to make it this far if I didn't eat breakfast. Managed to check out too and got a much needed vape.
We talked to many people. Some were actively wanting to apply, and some were just merely curious as to what we do. My colleagues did most of the salesmanship, whereas I just had a chat with a few people, explaining who we are and what schemes we cover. I didn't really sell anyone our company, but I was there! I showed my face! I'm glad I went. I genuinely don't know how I managed to go from 8:45 to about 4 PM without food. I got to McDonalds just before we left Manchester and I didn't feel hungry at all. Though when I started eating, I realised how hungry I actually was!
Being in Manchester for a night, it felt almost hostile. I didn't necessarily feel in danger, but I felt that I was more exposed to people who may have not accepted me. If that doesn't make sense then that's fine, it doesn't make sense to me either. What I mean is I feel that there is more crime in Manchester than there is in Newcastle. I didn't specifically see any anti social behaviour, I just got a feeling. Some people just looked and acted different. This is all probably because I'm actively aware that I'm not in Newcastle and my brain is drawing comparisons. Though statistics show that Manchester does have a higher crime rate than Newcastle so maybe I'm not wrong.
Here are some photos of the event. I went around about 2 hours before we left and took a couple of photos. I was going to take a video of the event but it wasn't anything special. It was just people wandering around and I'm not sure if people wanted to be in the video or not. So, I have taken a few photos and I will blur out their faces out of respect.
Our nemesis was at the event! I won't name who but if you know, you know. They aren't really, we just provide the same service and some prefer them, some prefer us. We spoke to them at one point, they came over and they were very nice.
I like the huge TV screens above, it made it feel very official and businesslike. There is just something about these events that make me feel like I've done well to be there.
As you can see, there were MANY people. These photos don't do it justice as these were taken after the huge wave of people came through. It only lasted about 45 minutes, but it was very packed for 45 minutes. You could still walk around, but many people were in the way. It wasn't like a concert or anything.
There was one person who was considering choosing us over our competitor. But after realising it may take longer to be registered, he reconsidered and said our competitor said it would be quicker. I doubted that as I believe we are both in similar situations.
