Now, the length of this project looks very familiar doesn't it? Looks like I took Enhanced and just made it again? 18 tracks, 20 tracks, it's all the same if it's a bloated mess, right? Well, this project is a little different. The tracks on this are far better produced than Enhanced. That's still not to say that they are good though, they are just objectively better.
This album I named 19 because, at the time, I was 19. Crazy deep stuff right there. Also, I spelled "nineteen" wrong on the album cover, missing out the first "e". Nice one. This album is basically a bunch of hip-hop instrumentals. I sort of went back to my roots on this one where I was making music to essentially show off to my friends. They didn't specifically ask for it, but I did tell them that I was working on another album and that they might like it.
It's not a great album, but it is a better listen than Enhanced. It taught me about sampling other sounds. Up until this point, I had almost always limited myself to synths and plugins for making sounds. Now, I worked with many samples from sources I thought were cool sounding. Examples include "I Spoke To The Devil", "Dark Trees" and "Reaper". It does have some lo-fi songs at the front of the album, like "Far" and "Effect", because I was in a depresso era of my life and I liked how depressing some lo-fi songs sounded.
The reception from this was mixed. I remember Owen vaguely liking the song "Ropey", but felt that it was too polished, which I agree. A lot of rappers I listened to used grimy instrumentals and all of these were just a bit too clean sounding. Also, I remember a friend of mine at the time, Harry, said "Why are they all just instrumentals? Why didn't you add vocals?", which is a very good point, because on their own they are just that, instrumentals. They don't develop in any fun or interesting way, they are just waiting for someone to rap over.
But anyway, this project was definitely my most polished up until now in terms of production quality, but it was still painfully dull at times. I remember "The Story of Dan Jones" I made that because my friend James wanted a Lil Peep type song, and I think it sounds quite on point. I don't quite remember what the whole Dan Jones gag was about in high school though.
